Did you know the apostle Paul had his own gospel message, and it actually preceded the other four? Many times in his letters he used the phrase “my gospel” or “our gospel” (Rom 2:16 and 16:25, Gal 1:11, 1 Thes 1:5, 2 Cor 4:3), and he also acknowledged that his gospel wasn’t the only one (Gal 1:6-9, 2 Cor 11:4).

Is there any difference between Jesus' gospel and Paul's?

  • Jesus' gospel focused on God's imminent kingdom on earth and how to prepare for it.
  • Paul never even mentioned an earthly kingdom. His focus was entirely on the spiritual realm.
  • Jesus' gospel told people what they must do; Paul's told people only what they must believe.
  • In fact, across all of his letters Paul briefly quoted only a few of Jesus' sayings.

Did Jesus call everyone to repentance? Did Paul call anyone?

  • Jesus said he was only calling on people who needed to repent.
  • He also explicitly acknowledged there were ordinary righteous people who didn't need to repent.
  • Paul barely mentioned repentance in any of his letters.

Does God forgive sins?

  • Jesus' preached that God's forgiveness is contingent only upon sincere repentance.
  • Paul's gospel was entirely focused on blood atonement instead of repentance and forgiveness.
  • For Paul, if God could simply forgive sins, then Jesus' death was meaningless.

Bottom line: Paul’s gospel virtually ignores what Jesus actually taught.
